Title IX and Sexual Misconduct

Title IX is the federal civil rights law that prohibits gender-based discrimination.  It states, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving federal financial assistance."

Title IX is best known for its impact on gender equity in college athletics.  However, another important aspect of the law is the prohibition of sexual harassment, including sexual misconduct, sexual assault, and sexual violence, because these acts can impede a person from accessing educational opportunities.  Imagine having to see your rapist in class every day, or worrying that your stalker is waiting for you in the parking lot.  A student in this situation is likely to drop out of school, or have stress-related absences and reduction in academic performance.
